Downtown Somersworth is changing and you now have an opportunity to get involved and guide that development! Somersworth Main Street is inviting all Somersworth residents to participate in the revitalization of the community’s center by becoming members of the Somersworth Main Street organization. Membership dues are tax-deductible and will be used directly for redevelopment programming.

Somersworth Main Street, Inc. was created in the summer of 2002 to foster a vibrant and livable downtown center. As a member of the New Hampshire Main Street Center, the organization focuses on incremental, long-term improvements not quick fixes. For those who stop and look around, it is obvious that the organization is accomplishing its mission. The slow transformation in Somersworth’s downtown is happening. There is a beautiful new parking area next to the VFW building, historic buildings coming back to life as home to new businesses, and an exciting energy exists amongst downtown residents, property owners, and business owners.

A list of the organizations accomplishments include:

  • Improved Signage: Five businesses have upgraded their signs using our grant program. Directional signs have been installed to assist business traffic flow.
  • Beautification Projects: Most notably, the public area in front of Great Falls Grill where the landscaping and Bus Shelter have been significantly improved.
  • Promotional Campaign: More dollars have been kept local by developing promotions (e.g., Shop Somersworth Downtown and Cooperative Radio Advertising) that encourage people to shop in town.
  • Historic Façade Renovation: In partnership with property owners and the Somersworth Housing Authority, six building facades have been renovated.

These accomplishments represent strides toward the goal of revitalizing downtown Somersworth, but there is still much to be done. The support of the Somersworth community is needed now to ensure Somersworth Main Street can continue it work, revitalizing the downtown historic district. Individuals can join the organization with $25 contribution or you can join at the Family level ($40 and up). Your contribution is tax-deductible and will mean that they can focus their energies the vacant mills that are ripe for development, bringing the arts to downtown, fostering business growth and expansion, and continuing to improve the physical appearance of the town center.
